Observation Project #1::

Bruce Shackelford and I observed the Lobby of the Education building @ 35 west 4th street. Its a rather borring lobby with out art or anything so we thought it could use something. When we got there though we noticed a practical issue when it got busy students would crowd infront of openning elevator doors, delaying the unloading of a full elevator. The students who want to get on the elevator only delay themselves by blocking those who wish to exit and thus impatience and crankyness is abound.

our proposed solution is two fold. One is to a a subtle sound environiment to the lobby area. not very loud and using consonant and or sothing tones. Except in front of the elevator doors will be unpleasant sound displayed by highly directional or perhaps even hypersonic speakers, that would only be heard by those standing in the door blooking possition. Even at low amplitudes hypersonic sound would still be heard by those blasting their ipods.

As the doors opened the abrasive sounds would fade out so students leaving the elevator would not be punished for walking through the stand clear zone.

We propose that after some time students would be conditioned to stand clear of the elevators until the doors open and people have cleared out, making the unloading and loading of the elevators more efficient and helping everyone get where they need to go ontime. The pleasant sound out side of the stand clear zone would also make the time waiting for the elevator go by a little easier/calmer. With students getting places on time and remaining calm while waiting hopefully students in the education building would have a more pleasant experience each day they come to school.
